A suspect in a stolen car crashed into a home in the Beachwalk area over the weekend after fleeing from Florida State Troopers, officials said.
After speeding down I-95 in a blue Hyundai Saturday morning with police cruisers in pursuit, the suspect exited onto County Road 210 to evade arrest.
Troopers performed a PIT maneuver, sending the suspect down an embankment. He kept driving until hitting a Beacon Lakes townhome.
The suspect then exited his vehicle and fled on foot, eventually diving into a pond before being taken into custody.
Pictures from the scene show a woman being placed under arrest, but her role in the incident was not immediately clear.
Karen Cheek said she was on the phone with a friend when she suddenly saw police units flying past her patio doors.
She said she received a text from neighbors reporting police swarming the area with guns drawn and urging everyone to stay indoors.
“Sirens like crazy,” she wrote in a Facebook post. “I was startled — looking out my window by a group of officers walking past my front door escorting the man in cuffs out to the police.”
Stunned neighbors emerged from their homes and saw that the vehicle had struck a home.
“Thank God no one was killed,” Cheek said. “There are kids and dogs and people out everywhere at all times here.”
She commended law enforcement officers for safely taking the man into custody, saying they “swiftly put an end to this scary situation.”
The owners of the home that was hit were uninjured.
