Renowned deep dish pizza chain Rosati’s is planning a new location in St. Augustine.
The Chicago-style pie franchise will crank the ovens 520 W Twincourt Trail as part of 8,800-square-foot IGP Place retail center, according to the Jacksonville Business Journal.
“Our authentic family recipes have been passed down from generation to generation and have now made their way into homes across the country,” Rosati’s site states.
The brand’s origins date back to 1890, when founder Ferdinand Rosati — an immigrant from Naples, Italy — opened a small Italian eatery in Brooklyn’s Coney Island.
He would later move to Chicago, where he established another thriving restaurant in 1906 and expanded that venture to include a hotel, saloon and import export business.
His son, Saverio, opened up a second Chicago location in 1927, and the bustling venue soon became a favorite haunt for local big shots — including notorious gangster Al Capone, the site states.
Ferdinand would eventually retire, and his sons later opened pie-centric Rosati’s Pizza in the suburb of Mount Prospect in 1964. The family business multiplied rapidly, and the brand was franchised in 1978.
There are now more than 200 locations across the country — including one here locally in Orange Park.
The menu offers a wide variety of deep dish and regular pizzas — including the Windy City, topped with Italian sausage, garlic, onion and giardiniera.
The new location, spanning 1,480 square feet, is at the I-95 Interchange at International Golf Parkway.
