The 14-year-old boy who was severely injured in a Friday morning hit-and-run accident has been identified by his family as Maslin Mooney of Flagler Estates.
Mooney suffered a brain bleed, extensive dental damage, a broken wrist, and two broken legs after being struck by a driver at 6 a.m. while waiting for his school bus.
First Hastings Baptist Church, which is handling a fundraiser for his family, said in a Facebook post that Maslin, “layed on the side of the road unconscious until around 6:45 a.m. when a citizen discovered him and called first responders.”
The church said he is expected to remain hospitalized for up to six weeks and will require up to six months of rehabilitation due to the severity of his injuries.
“The family is facing significant financial strain due to travel, treatments, and hospital stays,” the post states. “In this difficult time, we’ve set up a collection to help support them. The church stressed that they are organizing the only official fundraiser for the Mooney family.
The house of worship gathered community members for a group prayer outside the Wolfson Children’s Hospital over the weekend.
“Power of God is working through all the prayers,” the church wrote. “Keep lifting them up they are being heard.”
Meanwhile, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office has interviewed a suspect in the case and has seized the vehicle involved in the accident, according to a statement from the department.
“This continues to be an active investigation as investigators continue to gather and process evidence,” the agency wrote. “Thank you to the public for the tremendous amount of information sharing, and for your encouragement and support for the family.”
No further details were released, and the investigation is ongoing.
Sheriff Robert Hardwick ripped the driver in the case on 904 Now Friday soon after the incident, calling the driver a “coward” for leaving Maslin in the street and fleeing the scene.
