A stunned Atlantic Beach couple said their dog was shot Thursday after it slipped out from under their backyard fence while they were on their honeymoon, according to a GoFundMe post.

Newlyweds Meghan Gordon and Shane Brennan — who are still out of town — said a neighbor called to tell them their dogs were in a neighboring area.

The concerned couple then rang a friend to go check on Scarlett. The pooch was eventually located before her wounds became apparent.

“It became disturbingly clear that somebody had shot Scarlett,” Meghan wrote on a GoFundMe post. “Her wounds indicated that the bullet grazed her on her ear, down her neck and along her back.”

Scarlett was taken to an emergency room veterinarian’s office and received stitches in her ear, according to the post.

Gordon said some of the injuries had to remain open to drain and guard against infection.

“If you know Shane and I then you know how much we love our dogs,” she wrote. “They are our kids in every way that matters and it breaks our hearts to think somebody would do something like this.”

Gordon wrote that she would be filing a police report after returning from her honeymoon abroad to “hopefully bring the shooter to justice.”

In the meantime, Gordon said vet invoices were piling up, and that Scarlett required daily exams until she was given a clean bill of health.

“Her vet bills obviously came as a shock to us and any donation that you can make is greatly appreciated,” the former Jacksonville University lacrosse player wrote.

The campaign has raised more than $2,000 thus far.
