St. Johns County is mulling a breakup with its trash hauling company.

Trash rules everything around me.

Citing strewn rubbish, uncollected garbage, toppled cans and general incompetence, St. Johns County Commissioner Henry Dean suggested parting ways with the municipality’s trash hauler — after only one week on the job.

Speaking at Tuesday’s County Commission meeting, Dean and other panelists said they were flooded with complaints from residents about FCC Environmental Services’ opening performance.

“This was, without question, a catastrophic failure in rollout,” County Commissioner Sarah Arnold seethed. “Not to mention, it was a catastrophic failure when we were staring down the eye of an impending hurricane.”

St. Johns County was awarded FCC a $28.2 trash hauling contract last year.

Dean said the panel would consider nixing the deal if performance doesn’t improve immediately.

“This has been, to me, an unmitigated disaster,” he said at the meeting. “We have to abide by the terms of the contract, but, personally, I’m prepared to move forward, as — legally — as soon as possible, to terminate this agreement.”

If that step is taken, the county would issue a new requerst for proposal and solicit fresh bids.
