An 8-month-old baby died after being placed on the ground Saturday morning and run over by a car believed to have been driven by one of his parents, according to a report.
Officials told News 4 Jax that a man and a woman were traveling in a car with the infant at 11 a.m. at Lenox and McDuff avenues near Riverside.
The couple began fighting at one point, and the the driver halted the car, the station reported.
“The driver stopped the vehicle at the intersection, opened the door, and placed the child on the ground,” JSO said. “The driver then drove off, striking the child with the vehicle.”
Rescue crews rushed the tot to the hospital where staffers declared the child dead.
The driver is currently in custody and the investigation is ongoing.
Police did not specify if the driver was the child’s mother or the father.
The incident was the second fatality involving a child in the last 24 hours.
A 7-year-old was shot dead Friday night after a car pulled up next to the boy and an adult companion and sprayed them with bullets.
JSO identified the boy as Breon Allen and the critically injured 21-year-old male as Lafayette Mango Jr.
The shocking killing drew a statement from Mayor Donna Deegan Saturday morning.
“Our city mourns the heartbreaking loss of a 7-year-old boy whose life was tragically taken in a senseless shooting,” she said. “This heartless violence has absolutely no place in our city. I am praying for his family as they experience the unthinkable pain of losing a child this way, and I urge anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.”
