A 63-year-old man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after chasing a 25-year-old man through a grocery store parking lot while brandishing a metal baton.

The incident began with a traffic dispute at the intersection of N. Ponce De Leon Blvd and Rambla Street, where the older man reportedly cut off the younger man while turning into the grocery store’s lot.

According to St. Augustine police, the beef continued once both men were in the parking area.

The suspect claimed to officers that his junior was yelling at him and insulting his spouse during the incident.

In response, the 63-year-old admitted to getting out of his vehicle and pursuing the younger man, who remained inside his car, on foot with a metal baton.

Body camera footage confirmed that he ran after the 25-year-old through the parking lot as he drove away.

The pursuit continued to a nearby bank drive-through ATM, where the older man made a movement that appeared to the younger man as if he intended to strike him or his vehicle, prompting him to drive away once again, police papers state.

Investigators later obtained video evidence from the victim’s phone and seized the metal baton.

After officers arrived, the younger man said he wanted to press criminal charges for aggravated assault.

The 63-year-old, who does not appear to have a prior record in St. Johns County, was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, papers show.

He was searched, placed in a patrol vehicle, and transported to the St. Johns County Jail without incident.
