A 23-year-old St. Augustine man was arrested this week for allegedly driving drunk at more than 100 miles per hour on Interstate 95 before slamming into a Nissan Rogue, killing the driver and seriously injuring his passenger, The Citizen has learned.

According to court documents, the horrific crash happened on May 4, 2024, just before 11 p.m. southbound on I-95 near International Golf Parkway.

Investigators said Logan Payne Turner’s white Ford Mustang was speeding and cutting in and out of traffic at speeds in excess of 120 miles per hour when it collided with the rear of the Nissan.

The impact forced the Nissan into the shoulder and up an embankment, where it struck concrete posts and overturned.

The driver of the Nissan, was ejected and later pronounced dead at HCA Florida Orange Park Hospital.

His female passenger was trapped inside the vehicle and survived the crash but lost a portion of her leg, papers state.

Stunned witnesses stopped to help the pair and saw Turner near the Mustang.

One noted he smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech, and admitted he was the driver. Arriving deputies also recorded Turner stating multiple times that he was behind the wheel.

Troopers reported that Turner struggled to answer questions, fumbled with his license, and showed signs of impairment.

Turner said he and a passenger had been drinking earlier at the Southern Social Whiskey Bar in Middleburg, and that he drove because his friend was too drunk. Turner admitted consuming “two Captain Morgan and Sprite drinks.”

A blood sample showed a blood alcohol level of 0.169, more than twice the legal limit.

Data retrieved from the Mustang revealed the vehicle was traveling between 107 and 126 miles per hour at the time of the collision, more than 50 miles over the posted speed limit.

Nearly 16 months after the crash, a felony arrest warrant was filed in St. Johns County Circuit Court charging Turner with vehicular homicide, DUI manslaughter, DUI causing serious bodily injury, DUI with property damage or personal injury, and reckless driving causing serious bodily injury.

Bond was set at a total of $252,500.
