St. Johns County Sheriff’s Deputies responded this afternoon to a serious crash involving a vehicle and a motorized bike in front of Patriot Oaks Academy.
The victim, a 12-year-old student at the K-8 school, was riding a 99cc gas-powered mini dirt bike when the crash occurred.
The child was wearing a helmet and was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.
Officials described the injuries as life-threatening.

The crash happened just after 3 p.m., around the time school was letting out.
All lanes of Longleaf Pine Parkway near the school were closed to traffic as deputies investigated the incident.
“Please avoid the area at this time,” the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the SJSO Traffic Unit.
In the wake of the incident, a scheduled basketball game at the campus was cancelled.
