A 12-year-old student has died following a crash Tuesday afternoon involving a vehicle and a motorized bike near Patriot Oaks Academy, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the scene just after 3 p.m., around the time school was dismissing students.

The crash occurred on Longleaf Pine Parkway in front of the K-8 campus.

According to authorities, the child was riding a 99cc gas-powered mini dirt bike in a crosswalk at the time of the collision.

The student was wearing a helmet, deputies said.

He was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening trauma and later passed.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit.

Patriot Oaks Academy is bringing in counselors to school Wednesday as the school absorbs the shock of Tuesday’s tragedy.
